Packed up

After many months of planning, several weeks of ordering stuff online, several days of packing, and a few days of ordering last minute stuff online I think we are ready to go. The Subaru Outback has a ton of space, and for one person I didn't give it a second thought. I even had room for a bed in case I wanted to sleep in the car. Adding a second person didn't double the gear, but it certainly does add a bit. This is my guess as to what we will need for three weeks, as well as a bunch of stuff we may need (and probably some stuff we will never need snuck in as well).

The front half of the bed was the first thing to go. I kept the back half which is designed to be used separately and works as a shelf over the bins which slide out. With the small bins in place, we then we started stuffing things into the car. We pondered and shuffled the big blue bins a few times, but once we figured those out most of the rest of the stuff fit pretty well. Then there was some time spent packing in some extra food and water in some of the nooks and crannies (who knew a Subaru was related to an English muffin?) Now all we have to do is remember where everything goes when we take it out.

Every so often I think about medieval travelers who walked for days with just a small sack, sleeping under hedge rows and eating off the land. The people hiking the Appalachian Trail right now aren't that far removed, although the gear is lighter. I think my camping compared to them is like the guys in the RVs compared to me; more space means more luxury, and less worries about whether you can stuff a granola bar into the gap between the bin and seat...
