Heading West
2022-07-02
PA, WV, OH, KY
Today we set off. We left the house at 7:00 AM heading for Mammoth Cave National Park in Kentucky. The route took us acroos PA and through the corner of West Virginia before heading west into Ohio and then into Kentucky. It was a holiday weekend, but for the most part traffic was light. There were plenty of police out picking off speeders, but I'm plenty old enough to use cruise control to keep me under the radar. There were also plenty of construction zones, and while they moved the barrels back for the holiday weekend, they did keep the speed limit reductions in place. I will admit I didn't see anybody pulled over in a construction zone.
We got to Mammoth Cave about 5 PM Central time and managed to arrive during the first rain of the day. Fifteen minutes earlier and we would've been here in the dry. But the storm passed, and we set up the tent. This was the first time we did a complete setup, and we did it in record time in case another storm came by. Ok, your first time is always a record, but the important part is that it was dry when more rain came.
We also explored the area by walking to the Visitors Center. The proximity of the campground to where the tours start was the reason we chose to stay here. My aversion to traffic and parking space hunting only gets keener every year.
